Hi, this is my morris or Morris style chair I would like to know if this is an original or reproduction? As this chair dose not have or use a metal bar holder or bar but has/uses a wooden dowel/bar and has slots in the wood to recline the chair in different positions The chair is in excellent condition and is tiger oak there are 12 dell/spools on each side of the arms this chair to me looks to be Victorian (back folds flatb)but because of the wooden dowel/bar and not a metal bar/holder I'm not sure any information about this chair would be gladly appreciated thanks for reading.

If you have examined the underside, including under side of the arms and find no branding, chances are you will never know the origin. This style chair has been reproduced many times and you can even buy a kit and build it yourself. The metal rod found on most chairs is often the only thing marked and that is used for tracing origin. One company I can think of that used a wooden dowel was Gustav Stickley. He built this type chair many moons ago. An original should have mortise and tenon or through tenon joints held together with wooden pegs. More modern designs have a screw which is covered with a wooden plug to look like it is pegged. You will find it somewhat challenging to trace this piece. If you know any real old furniture or cabinet makers ask them to have a look at the construction. Pictures are ok but someone seeing it in person is always better.
