So I was told that this is Chinese, a small pendant incised and colored with a bird in a natural setting. There are some words on the pendant, don't know what they say. This has wavy lines and no blood or veins that I can see, so possibly ivory? Any information on meaning, era, what the words say, appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Thomas, not sure if the piece was made by hand, or manufactured. Never thought of that. Was ivory jewelry produced by machine? I suppose that's possible. If they made billiard balls and piano keys by machine, why not jewelry? I suppose I assumed this was hand made because of the chop, but that's not a good assumption since many produced pieces include an artist's signature.
Nice Ivory pendant, Katherine, hand carved, can't help for the writing, halas :-/

Thank you, Pascale, for confirming that this is ivory, my first piece unintentionally gotten at a swap meet booth for a dollar, and thank you for the information that it is hand carved. It's too bad we don't speak or read Chinese! :)
