I am going through my fathers tools, most things I can figure out but this has me stumped.
It appears to be brass except for the larger butterfly nut
At the hinge mid section there appears to be a faint imprint of a number '8'
My father was a clever man working in both wood and metal
I'd just like to know what it is and how it was used.
Cheers
Good question ! Hope somebody knows.
Welcome to CW CDR looked a hundreds of patents so far with no luck, The top with the thumb screw looks like it would clamp on round stock but right now I know nothing, Hope we find out (it's bugging me already)
hang around we see all kinds of cool things here
Perhaps a lab apparatus clamp:

There are some custom made ones for unique glassware setups...

Think you got it TA well done!
Thank you TubeAmp, it makes sense now as my father did work at the University of Melbourne for years.
You're welcome. Always happy to help.

cramp from walking?!
Lab apparatus - probably a clamp for a test tube or glass flask/retort.
