My photo angle, trying to avoid light glare made her look short She is tall and slim, and I will take a photo that is laid flat next. This is in good condition but with some spots on the "frame" part., vintage period cabinet card by Estes, Seph. Missouri Anyone know what city" Seph." is short for? Black is plain, no name.
When did nursing for women became an accredited profession in the USA? She has her diploma. Imagine how proud she must be in this vintage photo.!!!!

      # 3 has better proportions,Tried to lighten the background, but that washed out the photo somewhat--She seems to be of proper proportion in it anyway. Thanks for looking!

" Seph." = Joseph maybe, If so likely Estes of St Joseph, MO
      another nice image Lois
    3. PostCardCollector PostCardCollector, 8 years ago
Thanks! I am glad the image was well received!!
Do you suppose those are congratulatory messages pinned on the plant (maybe brought along from home or work to be photographed as well?_
"Seph"? That may have been the abbreviation for St. Joseph. My great grandfather went there from Chicago to "dry out" in some Resort- Clinic from time to time with revitalizing waters and springs and--"high colonics" ?? after bouts with alcohol. (The story has passed down, over and over---what a way to be "remembered" That is the ONLY thing I know about the man!)

Ya know, that is not a nurses hat, and she is wearing earrings! So, maybe not a nurse!! But looks like a certificate of some kind and she appears to be in uniform. What the heck!

Sad how so many get lost to time, I know very little about either of mine and never met my grandfather on my Dads side, Dad never met his and Great Grandpa never met his a strange thing for a family tradition.
"high colonics" sounds like a BLAST
    6. PostCardCollector PostCardCollector, 8 years ago
I looked it up===A "BLAST" for sure!!
Colonic irrigation also known as colon hydrotherapy, colonic hydrotherapy, or a "colonic", is a treatment which is used "to wash out the contents of the large bowel by means of copious enemas using water or other medication."
And my great grandfather went to a SPA for them. I am kinda glad now I never met him! Weirdo....

He was open minded (or ended) anyhow

Yes, my Irish relatives were all unusual. My grandmother ran to hide the silverware in a thunderstorm and we still to this day carry on this nite-time tradition--if you by error put your nightgown on inside out or backwards--you cannot change it right--for "if you do...you'll be dead by morning" Carried right down to me' kids! Begorrah!!

Why hide the silverware in a thunderstorm? whats the story there.
About the only superstitious thing my Grandma did was to have a shot and a cigar on her birthday (July 4th 1897 a real Yankee doodle dandy) she didn't smoke or drink the rest of the year and made it to age 98 RIP

There was nothing unusual about having water injected up your bum back then. It was typical of most sanitariums of the day, which we now call resort spas. The medical profession back deemed it healthful and important. We may consider it disturbing now, and I'm sure they were uncomfortable with it at first, but it was healthy.

Check out these pictures - your nurses could very well have nurses caps on. There are some strange ones in the link.

I guess way back in Ireland there were many irrational superstition s we will never understand. Unfortunately it affected my Dad negatively almost his whole life. She would dash around and get every piece in a drawer just as her mother did. The Irish were huge on superstition!! I am thankful I have never felt the need for a spa treatment.Gross. Eating right may be the answer and no vices. The drinking gene was not part of my fate, No smoking ciggies either. And I am happy That is probably why I wouldn't, need a spa. Is chocolate a vice?? I would walk five miles for a Hershy bar!!

GILLIAN & MANIKIN, you kids have made me soooo happy, as you ALWAYS DO, for everyone. I love it here!! LOVED the links!! Seems my first impression of this photo may have been correct. I was so freaked I checked out housemaids -- altho, I don't think they got diplomas. Sigh of relief coming out of me now. Cheers!

What a beautiful piece of history! ????? The pride she must’ve felt with her diploma in hand is inspiring. ??????????? As for “Seph,” could it be short for “Sephora” or another vintage town name? ????
