Can anyone help me figure out this piece? I believe it was made in 1884 and is made of oak ( I think) with a veneer coating . 7 ft x 27"x54". It's location has been eastern Ontario . I inherited it from my parents . No makings or stamp. There is a hand written 1929-1884 = 45 . Very heavy solid piece. Thanks for any help . Deb

People scribble all sorts of stuff on all sorts of items. Often I do math in sand to figure out the age of something, as mental math is not my strongsuit. Someone may have thought the piece was made in 1884, but 45 years is a long time to remember something so unimportant as how old a then merely vintage piece of furniture is. My thought is, someone was trying to figure out how old someone is but lost all the usable paper.

Looks to be a mid 19th century Empire sideboard. The scrolled details and dark veneers are typical.

I love it, but the style is not very popular today. Bargains abound in this type of furniture and tastes will change in the future.

Some additional photos of the construction (joints, interior, etc... ) would be nice to see.

      Hi Deb,

Welcome to CW. You have a beautiful piece. From what I can see - the picture is very, very dark - the wood grain is especially lovely.

Would you be able to post some pictures that are in natural light so I can see it properly ;>))

As Scott says photos of the drawer construction, back of piece, inside of doors etc. would be a great help.

SpiritBear is most likely correct in his math musings - it meant something to the person who wrote it.

The French Empire style of furniture ran from 1804 - 1815, and underwent a revival from 1848 - 1870. http://www.timothy-corrigan.com/index.html

This looks more like English regency whereas that sstyle was not as heavy looking as Empire, it was in their use of sideboards which were generally quite heavy looking. Wish you had some pics of the ends of the top board which is covered by the lamps.

I can't seem to add any photos. This item does have dovetail joints. Also square nails. Very Heavy.

There has been some uploading problems lately, so try again at a later date.
