I suspect that this framed quilt (12 1/2" by 11" frame) represents a mythical bird in Native American lore and that it was probably made by a native tribe in the U.S.A. It has some moth damage in the upper right green area but otherwise is in great condition with still bright colours. Is this a common design and is it old? Any idea on the tribe that would have made it? I have photographed the green taped back. Thanks, R.E.R.

No, wrong on all counts. This is a mola, a type of revese applique needlework, made by the Kuna, of the San Blas Islands of Panama.

Originally made as part of the women's traditional blouse, most are made today for sale to tourists and collectors.

Thanks for this information! I have been wrong in the past but I do learn from requesting information from others. I appreciate your input. RER

i really like molas - particularly the old ones. the Kuna people i know would say that yes, you are right and this was made by native American people, as they consider themselves to be Native American. they are politically active in the Indigenous rights movement.
