This is something that's been on my "glass bucket list" for a long time, so it's fantastic to finally get one. I am not 100% certain if this is a John Walsh Walsh palm tree vase, as the shape is different to those I've seen documented as such, but I know it's Victorian & of English origin - & that other manufacturers such as Boulton & Mills also created their own versions of palm tree vases.
The double trunks & root - like applied footed base are made from clear glass, while the applied fronds are made from pale yellow - green glass (looks like it should glow under UV but response was very weak). It measures around 17 cm tall, 10.5 cm wide, & 8.5 cm across the base.
To me, this piece represents the ultimate in Victorian fantasies - a whimsical dream of the exotic, colonial tropics rendered in glass. Yes, there is a frond missing, but I can live with it to get such a rare item. The only problem is, now I want another one!
perfect prop for your own desert island just love it magic IronLace thanks for sharing

So delicately beautiful, and so evocative of sunny climes!
Love this! I'd not seen or heard of them before. There's so much in the glass world I've yet to discover, almost everyday I come across something new.
Like Fran I had never seen these! It's fantastic Iron Lace. Congratulations.
Thanks so much, MALKEY, Scott, nutsabotas6, sklo42, Vintagefran, & racer4four for all your lovely comments! Outside of pictures in books, this is the first of these vases I've ever seen in person. The documented Walsh Walsh versions had thorns on the trunks & tended to be made of cased glass in colours such as pink & yellow, with a white interior. They also had bases that were made up from many small clear applied leaves. But this piece has factors in common with other JWW pieces I have, especially that tree root foot. Apparently these vases were very popular in their time, but I guess not that many of them survived the last 130 odd years.
Beautiful piece of glass.
Congrats, on this new acquisition.
Regards
Alan
What a tropical beauty.
I remember the first time seeing these about 10 years ago. I continue to have no set but this one is fantastic with the green leaves, magnifique !~
Many thanks, Alan, & sorry for the extremely late reply. I believe that I had rather a lot going on this time three years ago...
Marty, thanks also & ditto the above!
PhilDMorris, thanks so much & glad you're enjoying it! For sure, these palm trees are magical, & I'm keen to find more...
