SUPER finely woven bamboo (?) over a white porcelain vase. Someone posted one similar some time ago. I think it's Japan. This one is only 3.5 inches tall. IMPOSSIBLY fine weaving. I THINK it's bamboo, the individual 'lines' are flat.
The weave pattern changes as it goes up the vase, at the shoulder.
The designs change color intensity depending on how you look at them.
Anyone know how this is done?
Hi! Anyone remember what this is called? Thanks! I've been away.
Thanks, Phil! I'm still waiting for someone to chime in. I have no idea how this is made, what it's called or where it's from still!
Skinner says Japanese. Others say Chinese. Did find a pair with paper labels "Made in people's republic of China". (mid '70s -78)

Oh wow. Hermes is branding tea sets now (2010, anyway!)
- they call it 'bamboo thread' - and there's even a pic of someone doing it.
"Today in Shanghai, Jing Daily had the privilege of attending a media event hosted by Hermès’ new “created in China” luxury brand Shang Xia, the first-ever Chinese high-end lifestyle brand built from the ground up by a major European luxury house. "

Here's a video that show a BIT of a man weaving the bamboo on the porcelain cup.

WOW! Here's a good video showing technique. Unbelievable. From Qing Dynasty to today. (Video is from 2006)
"These elegant porcelain items are covered with patterns and carefully woven with bamboo strands. Only one breed of bamboo is suitable for making the cover. The piece in question must be over 66cm long between two ridges, lack marks or scratches of any kind, and be at least two years of age. The quality of the set is such that 50kg of bamboo can produce only 400 grams of finished bamboo strips.
This unique style of porcelain was developed in Qing Dynasty (over 200 years ago) and was made exclusively for the royal family. The nature of the porcelain and skillful bamboo weave make this a perfect and unique gift from China."
