It is a Mettlach and shows duelling students.
It is worth about $400
This is an etched stoneware stein of a student banquet made by Villeroy & Boch at their Mettlach, Germany factory. There should be a two-digit number below and to the right of the logo on the bottom. This indicates the year of manufacture, 88 for 1888 and 01 for 1901. The text is: “Gaudeamus igitur, juvenes dum sumus.”
(Let us now rejoice, because we are young.) The lid text is taken from the first two lines of a song in Latin entitled De Brevitate Vita (The Brevity of Life) that has been popular among German students since the 13th century. Stein auction prices in mint condition range from $350to $450, but that includes about a 30% commission. Visit http://www.steincollectors.org to learn more about antique German beer steins.
