Just came across this very well shaped round coiled basket with lid. It measures approximately 6" across and 5" tall. It has a decorative pattern of seed beads in a triangle pattern. The seed beads are various sizes and colors and do not look modern. The bottom is rounded - though it does sit upright. Would love to know more about this basket. Age? Material? Origin?
Thanks for any clues!
It's a single-rod, coiled, rattan basket from Lombok, Indonesia.
The distinctive rounded basket with the inset lid is a traditional form that has been made in Lombok for years, in several sizes, both plain, with this type of beaded pattern, and fully beaded. All have this same start, which shows up as a little round hole in the bottom of the baskets and on the knob on the lid. It's a main identifying feature. No one else uses this particular combination of materials, construction technique, and form.
Hard to estimate age, since they've been made basically the same way for a long time, but the beaded decoration began showing up on the market here in the States about 20 years ago.
Thank you Canyon Road!
I really appreciate the information.
