I bought a box of old photos today and this CDV was in it. I noticed that it had square corners, which I learned indicated an earlier CDV thanks to the wonderful experts on Collectors Weekly! The building is the Morley Hotel, and on the first floor is the Centennial Hair Dressing Saloon, which according to the signs, also sold "Segars" and tobacco. There looks to be a second business on the first floor, but the signs on the building and window are unreadable. I've tried searching for these business on Google, but couldn't find anything. Based on the information I have, the man who originally owned the photo lived in Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and then in the Lowell/Lynn, MA area. There is no photographer's name on the photo.

It is definitely not Morley's Hotel in London or Morley's Hotel in Morley, NY based on period photos I found online of each of the hotels.

Interesting! I think the tobacco signs have to do with the hair dressing place and not a separate company. Incidentally, there was a seller of tobacco and a hairdresser both living in the "City Hotel" in Lowell, MA in 1874. Not sure if the name could have changed or not, but who knows!

I didn't even notice the spelling "segars", so don't guess I'll be much help. Been stuck in KY too long ! LOL !

Another interesting question would be: 'what on earth is that *pole* on the street corner for?' It looks far too high to hold street lighting or utility wires...??

Yeah AO, I missed that too ! Of course after most of my life in the Caribes, if it had been in the middle of the road, I might think it "normal". Actually, in Black River, Jamaica, there is a utility pole in the middle of an intersection that we all just drove around & didn't notice it until a visiting friend made a comment. LOL !

AnythingObscure, I didn't even notice that! Could it be a flag pole?
