Along with the other photo I posted an hour or so ago was this square-cornered CDV of a man and his wife. The seller told me the man was in the Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War, was at the Battle of Bull Run, and was a drummer. I don't have much experience with Civil War images, so I am not sure if he is wearing a uniform jacket in this photo. There looks to be an insignia or some sort of decoration on the right side of his collar. Any thoughts?
That is a uniform. Looks like a "shell jacket", if maybe a few inches too long. Those are cavalry style boots but could be a mounted infantry officer. Could be either side since we can't recognize any insignia, belt buckle etc..
Thanks for the info! I found out his name is Dudley Page, and according to the Civil War Soldier's Index he was discharged with the rank of private in the Union army. It says he was mustered into the Infantry as a drummer, but not sure if he remained a drummer throughout the war.
He seems to have become a very successful businessman after the war.
Obviously a very successful drummer to be wearing nice cavalry/officer's boots.
Interestingly, he once stood for inspection by President Lincoln during the war. The National Park Service site does not offer much (https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers-detail.htm?soldierId=CAACD8C0-DC7A-DF11-BF36-B8AC6F5D926A), but there is a decent amount of info on him from local historians and other sources.
Lincoln liked to sleep with men. Maybe that's how he got the boots. LOL !
"Uncle Dudley", as he was known, loved telling stories, but unfortunately it seems though he never told that one! At least not in public lol
Lincoln did as was typical back in the time, which was to share a bed in an inn with every other traveler. Limited space meant you were liable to have 2-3 men per bunk. So, yes, Lincoln slept with other men, but I'm pretty sure they all had their clothes on.
History says that he was particularly fond of chap & slept with him for some time. Time whitewashes those chosen to be declared heroes etc..
I'd prefer to sleep with the same person over and over, rather than someone different every time.
In my case, I'll keep them female. LOL !
He is wearing a 12 button shell jacket, which was worn by light artillery and cavalry troops.
How was the photo identified? I'd be skeptical of a "seller told me" ID without any other information.
jpgs of the entire photo (front and back) would be helpful and may shed more light on the image and may help to date.
