I was very confused with this piece because I was translating it wrong. When I figured it out, I saw a couple pieces that were made into frogs with this style and apparently this is a vase. Odd but a vase. It is from Mexico. Estudianlina, Real Sta Fe, Guanajuato, Mexico and there is a large "M" on the bottom. This piece has a lot of crazing that can be seen in the white area.

Still somewhat confused as to the Iron Cross, where is the correlation to Mexico ??? And the way the bottom seems to be ... apologies, I get it now. It almost looked spray painted on the bottom and I just realized that it's the glaze and lack of that is giving it a very different affect at the base. The center of the base is glazed, then there is a rim (?) foot (?) maybe that's called a ring (?) that is not glazed.

Oh Geeze, that was fun, right?!? I still don't understand this and don't know why I picked it up??? Any help?

Thanks for any interest out there ;)

It's a Maltese cross, a common symbol seen in Mexico. Are you sure it's not a whistle? :-))))))))

Looks like a vinaigrette bottle to me. Do the Mexicans make them?

Bonnie, Is it really a whistle? OMG, I bet it is!!! At the same place I got 2 little toucan ceramic whistles...haha at first I didn't know what the holes in those were for until my friend told me they were whistles and I never related the two. I bet for sure the same owner had these! I'll post the other two...Thanks so much girl. I thought it was a pipe and wondered what they could smoke out of such a small hole, then I thought a netty pot! I should quit telling on myself, right?! haha

Karen, pretty odd right? I think you'll like the toucans I'll post. Thanks Karen.

Bonnie! Guess what? It's NOT a whistle!! haha I was going to list it and thought I better test it first...not a peep!!! Excellent try though. Back to the netty pot theory??? haha Maybe it is just a vase, strange. The toucans are definitely whistles and surprisingly not obnoxious ones.

My guess is that this is a tourist piece Susie. Estudiantina Real Sante Fe, Guanajuato is a group of musicians (there are many groups) who play traditional songs throughout the streets in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Now, the piece mentions Real Santa Fe, So I'm assuming this group is from that University. Being that their background is music, it makes sense that this may be some type of whistle like you said. Maybe it's something that the group uses to earn money?

You know what Susie, although the holes not in the right place, this could-be one of those flasks (porron) they use in Spain to poor wine out of. That's what I thought at 1st, but then what threw me is at that the hole is not on the tip tip but back-a slight bit which I don't think would affect the use either way. Now tying it in with the Spanish traditional music, it very well could be a porron.

Hi Rick! Actually this does not whistle! or maybe it does if you purse the lips, I don't know...haha I'm going to go get it and try again...be right back!

Noooooope, not even if trying to play like a horn. OMG I got light headed LOL!!! I guess I didn't make that clear up in the comments...don't know I have to go back and read it.

Go to this link and look at the clock I just got at an estate sale! :

This is actually used for drinking. You usually get them while doing a walking tour with estudiantinas, they sing and play music. I have a couple of them.
