Very little known about this near pioneer hotel, 2 stories, frame, and near the RR depot. There was a terrible tornado in about 1912 and this hotel went down. I cut off the photo of the extremly aged couple far right who must have been the "pioneers:" who began the hotel . Monthly rentals available--good for the people who got off the nearby train. I'll try for another photo of the very old couple far right.-- Got this on the "net" very recently. AZO real photo card and may be the only historical photo left!

You know, the place looks haunted! I suppose in its day, being so cheaply made,
it could have enticed folks to the "place on the wrong side of the tracks", Those are all pretty women there.
The horse looks to be built on on a spring--so really I suppose it was family friendy place after all. There were many grand hotels in Terre Haute , and this looks like a "dump" but ok in a pinch for folks getting of the train. (station not far) and if they couldn't find work, they could stay by the month. It was not on the main street of town, and seems had little to offer but shelter , and who knows what.

The women left and right of the child on the horse are smiling broadly.

BIG smiles at the Indiana Hotel
And it looks like a nice day! I wonder how close to the banks of the Wabash?

I have noticed the women look exceptionally pretty and well dressed too, for the place they were staying.. --They looked like people who would be staying at a downtown hotel--not there. That is a puzzle for me!

Last night in a book published in 1879 by what became a prominent doctor, I read that the av. height of a man was 5 feet 8 inches. The av. height of a woman was 5 feet 2 inches.
The hotel looks small, but I'd be fine with it, I'm sure. Nothing too shabby.

Was the horse mounted on the porch or can it be moved? It isn't coin operated is it, (if a permanent fixture)==Or maybe it belonged to the parents who may have rented by the month. It does seen unusual if it is a mounted ride--to be there in the first place.

Nope not connected to the porch as far as I can see, Looks like the front could be but isn't but the rear has no bracket to mount.

THE TWISTER THAT FLATTENED A LOT OF BUILDINGS IN TRERRA HAUTE !1912)
I wonder if there were folks in the hotel when the terrible tornado struck Terra Haute. The aprox year of this photo must be near the year of the tragedy. Many people died in that city and the loss of many structures too--even downtown brick buildings.Poor little hotel--I'll bet it was totally flattened. It was not reopened.
There was a news account that said at "a" hotel a woman was blown and trapped, dying when she was wedged into a doorway's frame and wood rubble".
---and a farmer's pig found alright condition in downtown Terra Haute--
      Horses were blown places too.

I guess it was an all time "biggest tornado" in Terra Haute I think it was 1912.
The hotel looks a little bit"ramshackle" to me. But the people look really neat and nice.It may have been real homey inside. Wish I had a photo of that!
