This item was found behind a nicely framed watercolor..
Chaucer's Canterbury Pilgrims was one of Blake?s major attempts at building a reputation as a painter-engraver and achieving the critical and financial success which had so far eluded him. He declared that the English nation would "flourish or decay" according to the recognition they gave him for his year?s labour.
It measures 8-3/8" x 23-3/8". And is NOT a print, by any means..
I have researched the piece, and have found that there were 5 or 6 states of the original, with several sometimes small differences in each, plus some coloring a bit later...Here is what puzzles me..
There is some handwritten writing and notes/changes it apperars, to the left, and the right of the main title.. Some I can make out..War and riding, and im working on the rest..
Can anybody tell me more about the artist? Thank you!
It should read: Chaucers Canterbury Pilgrims, and with the names of the pilgrims, Reeve, Chaucer, Clerk of Oxenford, Cook, Miller, Wife of Bath, Merchant, Parson, Man of Law, Plowman, Physician, Franklin, 2 Citizens, Shipman, The Host, Sompnour, Manciple, Pardoner, Monk, Friar, a Citizen, Lady Abbess, Nun, 3 Priests, Squires, Yeoman, Knight, Squire.

Well, it beats any item I've found behind other images. And I've found some neat art behind art. LOL. Wonderful find.
