Lovely thistle brooch marked "Mizpa". It was bought on ebay several years ago. It measures 1.9x1.4 inches.
Unfortunately, all I know about this mark is that it's connected to scottish style jewelry. Can anyone tell me more? :)
I like it!! Beautiful color
A friendship brooch.
Mizpah is from Genesis 31:49.
Thanks all for loving!
Efesgirl, it's really interesting, I didn't knew that.
nutsabotas6, thank you for link, I will look for mark.
Typical vintage Scottish brooch , base metal , plated sometimes with silver , or rhodium amethyst stones usually paste , this particular pattern brooch is also made in sterling silver
"The hearts and arrow signature with or without the Mizpah signature was made by the Ward Brothers from Scotland. Who had factories in both Scotland and Birmingham. The signature is on the back of a piece.
Not to be confused with the Victorian MIZPAH jewellery which was usually heart designs with the words Mizpah on the front. Sentimental and worn by someone separated from their loved ones.
Two very different styles of jewellery and should never be taken for the same meanings."
These can get a bit confusing and I believe Miracle has taken over the Ward Bros designs now!
The thistle figures prominently in Scottish items all the way to flags and coats of arms.
Should have added that I love your brooch!!
TassieDevil, big thanks for comprehensive answer! Now I mark it solved :)
You are very welcome Tenshi.......thank you:-))
