This is a very unusual brooch; at least I think so. It is marked "Germany" and has one other mark that looks like the letter "n" - but I am not really sure about that.
I am positive that it is sterling and was hand-made. I am also sure that it dates to before WW II.
The construction has a certain Arts and Crafts feeling but the design doesn't really support that, or does it?
The body of the ship has a very unusual bubbly finish and the sails look like finished with enamel. I haven't cleaned it yet because I don't want to damage the finish.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking:)
Thanks a lot, aura:)
In the UK we had a TV series childs programme called Blue Peter and their brand image was a sailing ship like this one!
What a lovely brooch!
Very unusual~! In my experience with German silver, there is almost always a purity mark. I see something else on there that looks like "00", so am wondering if there is an "8" in front of them. Clean it up just enough to be able to see the marks.
Very pretty! If the sails are enameled, no problem
GeodeJem, I looked it up and you are right. It really looks very similar:)
Thanks so much for your comment, bijoucaillouvintage:)
Efesgirl, sorry for my late response. I have been so busy recently:(
I started cleaning the brooch but I didn't find any other marks. You are correct about the Germans putting purity marks on pretty much everything. Maybe what I think is the letter n is actually part of a purity mark:)
