I got this from a guy at the Alameda Flea today. it's unusual to see an old piece with the stick and and cordage still attached. i'm not sure how old it is, but it has a lot of age to it. could be late 19th century or much earlier. what do you think? maybe CanyonRd knows?

It's cool but I think the Indians would use leather for a wrap instead of string. It looks cool but should show more age since it was a Stone Age tool.

Thanks Charlie. i don't think it's THAT old! i have a couple of Ohlone reproduction pieces made w/ this kind of cordage too. i've seen some authentic ones at the Oakland Museum too.

I would expect them to use sinew.

yeah, i guess you're right because sinew can be tightened much more and stays in place. the rock itself looks to be a genuine artifact and the stick so closely conforms to it though... maybe sinew was replaced w/ this cordage in more modern times?
