This is one of my Fav photos. I found this about a year or so ago. What caught my eye is their dress and the fact that they are sitting with an African American man during this time in history.

When I found the photo I thought the African American man was "Isom Dart" a black cowboy from Brown's Hole area. You can google and read more about his story. Still trying to find more info about this tintype.

Let me know what you think.

can we see the whole photo?
    2. VintagePhotoCollector VintagePhotoCollector, 7 years ago
Yes, I will try to upload the full photo. I don't think he is a prisoner. He is holding what looks like a top hat and has what looks to be a cigar in his hand.

Interesting photo. I have seen it before.

I'd like to see the supporting evidence/ documentation/ provenance that led to the attribution.

      Runaway slave?
    5. PostCardCollector PostCardCollector, 7 years ago
What is that around his neck? Some part of a costume?
His expression makes me think he may be distressed. But the photo seems decades past slavery times.

Unbuttoned collar the wrapped the neck??

Clothing is 1880s- 90s, so not a slave.

Well I added the best full photo. As you can see it is not the best scan or best condition. You can see the full dress and shoes. Also they are sitting very close to each other which make me think they were friends.

      Thanks

I included a second photo that was found at the same time and place. I was told they were from the same collection and that the collector had passed away.

I like the first photo-- it is GREAT. It stands on its own merits w/o any suggestion of an attribution.

It almost seems he is "trapped" by the bodily position of the man's arms. He looks really uncomfortable.( Like he didn't want the photo taken.) How interesting.

The middle man looks more than uncomfortable. My take is: memento mori with the other men propping him up.
    14. scottvez scottvez, 7 years ago
I don't see anything that suggests the middle man is pm.

Legs crossed, eyes open and seated-- each individually would be unusual for a pm view. Taken together, it makes it very unlikely.

I see a yoke around his neck. He's very skinny, and doesn't look like he wants to be there at all. See how dreadfully skinny his fingers are.
