I was happy to get this even though I know it is in poor condition--It is poignant and loving and I have never seen anything like it.
The tin "Sam, and the name woven in hair with a message on back were always kept together, and bought in the original dirty worn envelope. I suppose it is 1870s or there abouts.
The tin has darkend, has damage and bends--probably because of being aprox 140 years old in a decaying envelope..must have passed thru a lot of future families hands and maybe most couldn't care less--or was in an old family album.
Anyway,I am glad at least they were kept together---The man was Sam, and either his wife, sister or daughter did this--- most likely after he passed. Very tiny, I think" tatting" stitches Intricate and not an easy task--but a very loving one. And my collection is all about loving ( "just folks and daily life)

I am asking today if anyone can decipher the back text, on the back of the hair work Long stitches over it that attached each section to the paper might make it difficult, but it starts "My Dear--or My Dearest--Can someone help read it?? Thanks so much!!! Lois

Looks as if there is writing on the front 3 panels.
Just the needlework is on the opposite. The tin is separate from the? piece of hair tatted into the man's name SAM.Thanks for dropping in.
Looks to be writing on each panel of needlework when zoomed in.

Yes--The panel with the tatted name front, and written text on the back are separate from the tintype..Nothing but dark rust on the back of the tin
but spent way over 100 years together in a rotten envelope. So I have assumed SAM is the man in the photo. and I added his wife probably did the tatted name and on the back a message by who and what did it say.Will we ever know? I guess I am nosey Hopefully someone here has he way and means , equipment-wize and time to find this out. This is rare obviously, and I feel very special that it came into my collection! Each tatted panel appears to have a name signed to it.
I see nothing except on the? reverse.
Ooops tbe question mark does not belong? up there.
Does it say "Lucy" in the top part of the S?

Yes it appears to say Lucy. And also each other appears to be assigned a name.

@eye4beauty I thought the S also had some name like Jack, and the A has something like Josephine, and the M had one or two names too....? Very faintly
I can't see a thing as far as the Letters on the SAM side. But I do have not so hot of eyesight. I really appreciate the efforts here to solve the mystery--Funny I can see parts of the written message on the back starting "My dear"-- in cursive writing in pencil.
The first picture's a bit blurry, but Lucy looks pretty clear. The other names look really faded, I'm not sure what they say. I wonder if they reused old paper or if pages of the letter on the back are missing because it doesn't look complete, but I could be completely wrong of course! lol. Wish I could read it!
I agree with you, you can't help but feel this was made in love.
Yes Zilla, I started to work on the back script only to notice the writing on the front panels and the fact that they are trimmed with pinking shears. Leading me to start wondering if the three front panels and back were trimmed out of the same note, rendering any analysis of the content, in whole, unachievable.
Take it to a library. Librarians tend to be decent at reading and writing (in photos, it is just too hard to read), so one may be able to help you.
I really do appreciate all the work here! This item is the only one t.hat can bring a tear. Sentimental me.
