This beautiful rocker was either my great or great-great grandmother's chair. (I was born in 1976- and my grandmothers all passed well into their 9os) Our family originated from Sweden, but settled in Chicago in the mid 1800s.
The seat:
The seat is 20 inches across, outside rim to rim.
The seat has a stamp underneath that reads, "Busse seat patent size 16, shape:cobbler". The seat was black leather. It does not look original to the chair because it has ugly metal hooks that attach it to the chair. My grandmother cross-stitched a cover and laid it over the leather. The seat is surrounded by rivets.
The chair:
The chair is approx. 4 1/2 ' tall. It looks to have been re-varnished. The carvings at the top were painted gold, but I do not think the paint to be original to the chair. The chair holds a pencil signature underneath the seat rim that I can't make out. It looks like "H. Aaana"- it's so loopy and faint -I just can't read it.
