    Can anyone help?
Used to smoke fish in the chimney?
Found in an old house I have bought.
    Made of copper.
Including a handle to turn the spring.

Doesn't look like something that's ever been in a chimney; smoking meat doesn't require it revolving; the heat would degrade the spring. How big is it? How long is the part we can't see? Are you sure the bottom piece actually goes with the top part? Need more pics unless somebody recognizes it on sight. I think it's a 19th Century disco ball rotator. Those Victorians really knew how to party!

Usually called a bottle-jack because of it's shape, it was wound and would turn meat in front of a fire.

TA strikes again! So it's a rotisserie?

LOL!!! That's crazy too. Of course T.A. would know!!! Another one that ceases to amaze me but you actually did have the answer anyway...wow, looks very primitive. Almost like a string tied to two cans!!! haha

You laugh, but poorer people that couldn't afford a luxury spit-jack like this did use a twisted string tied to a rock to get a twirling motion going. ;)
