I've had this black on black for a while now and I just can't ID it. I think that it may have been signed on the bottom or I'm just wishing it was but the deal is, here in Cali, we do have the good ol' earthshakes and many people put that waxy gunk on the bottom of their stuff and this is exactly what happens. It doesn't come off a lot of items. It's made a mush out of the bottom of this bowl.

I don't think it is Maria and Julian's because it's not as perfect as seen by them. Unless, could this possibly be a very early piece? The previous owner seemed to think it was a very important piece.

I would greatly appreciate all opinions anyone has.

    Thanks for all your help!

It looks like San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery to me. I studied ceramics in the 70s & 80s and my disseration/thesis was on Pueblo Pottery. I hope this helps. Also have a look at https://kinggalleries.com/product-category/san-ildefonso-pueblo/
It's a beautiful piece, even with the fissure. If my memory serves me at all well, some of the pieces were used as funeral/burial purposes and the banding around the top was left incomplete to allow the spirit to be set free.

possibly by Maximiliana “Anna” Martinez, or her sister Maria Martinez.

vintiquechique I have to tell you, you really made my day! Wow, it's been 9 years ago that I got this piece, I had not realized that until just now but back then I did a lot of research on this and always had a gut feeling that it just had to be Maria's work. I obviously still don't know that for sure but have to say, when I clicked on the link, there was a piece that screamed out at me right away! I am super excited about that! Thank you so much for your information. Looks like I won't be taking this piece with me to the flea market and I've always been leary of shipping it anywhere. I think I have also just found two new favorite artists; Tony Da and Les Namingha! Thank you so much. I actually had that site that you linked here in my bookmarks but had forgotten. I appreciate your effort here too! Thank you!

I have to apologize to you all for lagging in my thanks to you. I can tell you that I am trying my best to reorganize everything and get some kind of structure in order here. It's not really working well for me but I am trying. So until then, please understand that I am not trying to be rude, I'm just perfectly unorganized!

Thanks and love to you all!

I have one also but i have been led to believe that it is more Santo Domingo than Santa Clara. I love it just the same. Mine is well used and worn on the bottom.
