After being in the sign industry for over 30 years I guess it's only natural that I would collect signs and sign related material. I have quite a few neon, salesman's samples, porcelain & tin signs and other advertising but these are actually some of my favorite sign related material! It took real talent to be able to hand letter a sign. I tried hand painting early in my career and let's just say I am much more comfortable welding up an aluminum frame or wiring a neon sign! These are the "kit" boxes a sign painter would carry around to do onsite work. Of course they would carry paint, brushes, thinner and other "tools" in these boxes. The last photo shows a box of DeVoe tempera paints used for show cards and such.

Love this stuff! Have you read the CW article about sign painting? http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/artisanal-advertising/

Thanks Hunter. It's a well done description.

Thanks a bunch Hunter! GR8 article and went through that period of everybody switching to vinyl. I HATE the stuff! It's handy and anyone can do it but it is what it looks like...cold and cheap! It has it's place, but it just doesn't impart any originality.

THX for all the love to everyone.

Sure thing - glad y'all enjoyed it. :) Hand-painted signs are the best; I'm glad they're making a comeback.

And nobody hardly actually thought about the skill it took to layout the design, much less to paint it.

Hunter & BB2. Couldn't agree more on both counts. Layout was and still a critical factor. I love driving by a really crappy sign and telling my family "I did that". Always gets a laugh.
