When I look at my Japanese glass collection I am amazed at the diversity of method and style, and their incorporation of Western themes and objects into their production. This is a piece that demonstrates this well.
This panel has been made by Kurata Glass, a maker who has produced volumes of pressed glass, including for Mikasa, has made cameo glass, lead crystal, iridescent glass, and of course exciting and different hand made pieces.
The relief on this glass panel is a copy of one side of the Ludovisi Throne, and depicts a young Greek girl, sitting cross legged and playing the twin flute, or aulos. I would not have thought this image particularly well known or relevant to late 20th century Japan, yet here is one of Japan's leading glass houses making a mould to press this image.
The panel is sizeable at 25cm x 28cm, and had been made to hang. The pressing appears to have been rimless, or it has been made to give that impression. The back is flow glass flat, but as you can see the front face has been deliberately made to be lumpy, and the general outcome is quite rustic. In fact it is perfectly made, and quite beautiful.
I now must find a window from which to hang it.
Oh it's so pretty softly illuminated by light bulb! You could use it like that?
Beautiful! And your pic is outstanding, Karen!
Wow-cool piece!! Nice find.
subdued graceful gracious piece !!!!!!!! Karen
Proof again that the technique of pressing can produce truly beautiful pieces. Gorgeous!
Stunning ! wow
Wow, beautiful and unusual. I've never seen anything like it.
I love this too. Just make sure that when you do hang it that the wire, leather or whatever material is used to hang it from is not very long. Well, here anyway, we have to watch for the earthquakes where if it were to swing too much, it could hit the window and the result would be obvious. Can you tell I've see it happen before! Even with the wind. It's just such a great piece.
Sorry all, been behind in my responses.
