this is a found iem. I noticed that large trucks were dumping dirt in an area. I noticed some bricks in the pile. I investigated and found some old bricks.Looking round I saw an object sticking out and extracted it. It was this knife. incrusted with thick rust. I took it home and found the handle almost eaten by something or destroyed, but I could see how it was made. I removed much of the rust with a file. I was able to slide the brass off the handle areaand crosspiece. .I used a file to remove a lot of rust. It was not possible to do.
. I gave the knife to a friend who surface ground down to good metal. I then polished and sharpened the blade and top cutting area with a diamond hone setup. diamond was the only material that would grind the steel.
I reconstructed the handle with leather then wrapped the pads with leather strip. The hand guard slipped up to the blade I soldered the bottom cap with a low melting solder called TIX.
The result is the knife. It is very sharp and extreamly hard. It fits myy hand very good
Looks like a genuine bowie knife to me. Hard to say how old it is as backyard blacksmiths have been making them since the first one was made.
Looks good.
