This is a really cool snuff bottle I just couldn't pass up. I'm not exactly sure how the process works but I do know that it's painted from the inside, how they actually accomplish this in such fine detail is an amazing mystery to me.

I'm thinking this is most likely a newer piece since there is not a scratch on it and the top is made of resin to appear as carnelian, I believe. There is no spoon attached, only a white spongy piece where older ones have cork.

I haven't searched for the writing yet but I believe one of the symbols represents the home, don't hold me to it though.

    Enjoy!

It's gorgeous! I love the happy children playing, and the skill in painting this from inside blows me away. It's an ongoing craft in China, and although this is newer, it still shows years of craft development. Love it Sue!

I knew you would Karen. I wasn't positive if they for sure were China or Japan. Either way, I can't fathom the idea of painting like this. I figured it was newer but I just couldn't pass it up!

How on earth did they manage to paint that on the inside! It always amazes me when I see these.

"Reverse painting" was popular late 1800s to 1920. This is especially enjoyable to view due to the cute kids!!! I had an unual one--done on clambroth glass.

Reverse painting is still done today. We had ornaments from recent years reverse-painted out of China and Japan, but the dog took out the tree and all the ornaments.

I did think this was newer but the price was right and had to get it anyway. The detail is amazing!
