A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came my way recently, which resulted in my most enjoyable acquisition to date. This one will be hard to better.
I was contacted by a gentleman who was looking to sell a salesman sample cooler owned by his father, who sold and delivered Coca-Cola 1930's-1950's.
So I packed up the van, Mrs. Nobucks rode shotgun. We drove 10 hours round trip, with a pleasant overnight stay in Lasalle County, Illinois. We met Bob and his wife on Father's Day morning, visited for an hour, and made the deal - which I financed almost completely by selling my entire beloved smalls collection...ouch! ;0( But it seemed right to sell the smalls to buy a small.
The miniature cooler is near mint, includes carrying case, sales aids, and an insulation sample (one of two original to the piece, which are highly prized, almost never found).
This is the crown jewel of my collection. It's all downhill from here! ;0)
Cool. But is it identical to the big version down to that it works, or is it just for looks?
If you ever want to give it away, please let me know Lol. I have never seen one, but only in pictures. Your right it is really nice, congratulations.
Congratulations Daddy_Nobucks!!
Congrarts Daddy!! Enjoy, she's a beauty!
I just drooled on my keyboard !
Wow Daddy!! "You da MAN!"
Congratulations my friend!
Holy Smokes Dave,,Jackpot!!!
That's the holy grail piece we'd all love to find! Nicely done my friend, and having the Mrs. along for the trip makes it even better!!
Cheers buddy!
I need to show the pictures to my neighbor. He worked for coke for 21 years and has a few old machines in his garage. He will love this little jewel. Thanks for sharing.
This solidifies your place on top of the Coke collectors world. I've seen only one in person in similar condition. Great job DN!
Thank you Spirit, Henry, Michael, JPS, bb2, FHR, David, Bernie, CK... such kind words appreciated.
Spirit Bear, yes identical to the equivalent ice cooler (electric refrigeration hadn't completely replaced ice yet in 1939).
CK, I flew too high to touch the sun, my wax wings melted, so I return to earth... where I belong! :0)
I think many would agree, the trip was worth it.
It was fun. After we got home, Bob sent me one of his dad's shirts as a gift (50's I think). Nice people. I handed over a fat stack.
Yes it is the crowning jewel of your collection for sure, Dave! What a beauty, wait till you see what I post in the next week or so.
Thanks Mr. Perry! Looking forward to seeing. Knowing your collection, it's gotta be off the charts!
Wow ! How very nice. Cool story and addition. Congrats !
Thank you e4b!
You are very welcome.
Holy COW that's one of the best examples I've EVER in my lifetime seen !!!!!Great find and that's the number one Coca Cola piece in any collection. The condition and it's all there just WOW. Love it for sure.
We may assume that Coke1234 likes this, just a little.
You betcha 1000%
Thanks Coke1234... me too.
Congrats !!! Awesome and rare to find with all the accessories :)
Thank you Trey, still enjoying it very much. Hope all is good with you.
Every time I see one of these on ebay it's either $6500 for a excellent condition or $4500 for one that is in good condition. Looked @ one that had touch up in many places and the pictures on ebay don't show up a lot of flaws. I passed on bidding because of the touch up and it sold for $3800 with only 2 bidders.
Your cooler looks really good and you bought it in person. That's the only way I'd buy one.
Thanks G99, I agree. I figured this was my one good shot at owning a salesman sample cooler so I took it. Like you, I've looked at a number of them before and felt squeamish. Got lucky. Keep up the good hunt.
Dave
Just sent you an email regarding the salesman sample.
Thanks
Phil
Still my all time favorite Coca-Cola collectible.
