Found in the woods north of Boston this summer. Smallish, 6" long by 2" at the blade. Lathing hatchet? Or something hand forged for roofing? Lots of pick marks in the surface.

This is called a "lathing hatchet." The square head and straight top surface define it. It was used to install the lath (long, thin strips of wood) onto which plaster was spread when finishing interior wall in old houses.

Thanks. I'll research further. Any way of knowing or determining age?

Not without a maker's name. They all look pretty much the same once they've been under ground. :-)

Uncle Ron must be as old as me if he remembers doing lathe and plaster.
