Happy 4th of July everyone. I came across this picture over the weekend and found it to be really interesting. It is signed, but I cannot make out the name, or what appears to be the date??? I am hoping someone out there can help by identifying something in the picture to pin it to a particular country or continent. There is a flag at the top, but the colors are hard to make out. Russian flag?
If anyone can recognize of decipher the signature that would be awesome. The first initial is covered by the frame, and it looks like "E."
It must be political satire or some kind of partisan commentary. Pretty cool though. Enjoy!
The poster hanging behind the monkey says, "Affentheater"

this is a print, isn't it?
What a great painting "BH"...I photo edited the signature. The date after it looks like 1864. Judging from the peoples clothes and the "Affentheater" poster 19th century seems correct. I can see the signature as well but still can't make it out. Very stylized long hand possibly a European name. Looks French. Signatures are never what they seem even when you do ID them. :)
ho2cultcha, to be honest, I am not sure now that you mention it. It is done on stretched canvas for sure. A very high-quality framing job with the framer's label still on the back. I think it is just a very grimy surface making it look flat like a print.
Could it be a print on stretched canvas?
mikelv thank you for the info! I do agree the date is there and I am glad you were able to ID it. the name is tricky, it is something like: E. Kimmel
Thanks for the help!!!
I added a B&W shot of the signature if anyone can help that would be great.
i don't see any brush marks whatsoever, and the image looks familiar to me, which makes me think you have a nice print.
it is very possible....you think it is a print on canvas?
Here are some more pics ho2cultcha.
