My cats bought me this stop sign for Fathers' Day which was quite nice of them. Luckily they could not sneak into the photos.
The white has yellowed which is a good sign of it being a vintage sign. Plus the red paint has crackled. It is semi-reflective as it does not shime brightly as I pull up my driveway.
The bullet hole adds to the sign I think, that is how they vandalize signs in rural areas. Looks much better than spray paint a look I rather dislike.
The bullet hole looks like a .30 caliber (7.62mm) as large as a 9mm but my guess is .30 caliber. As the sign is older I am thinking a 30.06 aka 7.62x63mm (I think) which would be the most popular .30 caliber at the time.
    OK that's enough padding.

Gotta love cats. Not a very good shot what ever calibre lol.

Depends on distance and how inexperienced the vandal was, I suppose! Still living in a rural area you'd have to make your own entertainment......

Thank you very much Caperkid. Perhaps it was from a mile away.

Thank you very much sklo42. I would guess the vandal took a quick shot and ran off.

Around these parts, I'm betting most 'road sign hunters' are actually playing 'target practice', most likely from their (moving) pickup trucks. Accuracy doesn't matter so much as just hitting the target, which would be accompanied by a telltale noise so you'd know if you got it or not, even if its way after dark... <lolol>

I agree, bullet holes give old road signs an extra "character". ;-) :-) I have at least 3 signs that have been shot at (but survived?!) in my own collection, even. I'll guess your STOP could easily be 40yrs old anyway, with that type of reflective layer and level of weathering. VERY COOL!!! <applause>

Didn't come from AL or it would have a lot more bullet holes !! Right, Thomas ? I mean "extra character" . LOL

Thank you very much AnythingObscure. It does seem to add value. The price tags tend to have "Bullet Holes!!!!" Hopefully they won't hit my snowblower if they but more bullet holes in it.

Thank you very much valentino97. I think they sell vintage cat toys on eBay.

Thank you very much BB2. The Mojave desert has a lot of character or as the sign in Lucerne Valley says "A Town With Character(s)."

I have 1 more bullet hole than your sign. Don't think that means I have "extra character" though.
    13. fortapache fortapache, 7 years ago
You may not have extra character but you may be one. I could probably fit in at Lucerne Valley.

Thank you very much Oroyoroyisthatyourhorse. That is indeed Lucerne Valley. I bought my boy scout flashlight there at Cadillac Antiques.
