Hello, I have an item in question as to whether this is Native American or not. This item measures 2 1/8 inches in diameter and is marked on the back (what can be made out): John ?, ??, from Iceland, dated 1792. It appears to be a lid? perhaps, made with glass beads atop what appears to be tortoise shell. I was wondering if anyone has seen this design/pattern or if they have any information as to what it could be. I have no history on this piece, which makes it more frustrating. Thank you! It's so much better in person. The colors are more darker than shown. Shame about the cracking to the back. I was wondering if I should put some type of oil on it to preserve it or just some Vaseline? Again, thank you for your help.

Which I'm very glad to be a part of..thanks for the welcome! Maybe one day I can help someone. Unfortunately, no history on this piece. My sister found it at a yard sale in southern California with some jewelry. That's as far as it goes. Ugh. Like you said..very intriguing indeed!

"Sablé" means the beads are so close to each others it looks like grains of sand on a beach :-)

The date 1782 (rather than 1792) fits the early examples.
These were gifts to beloved ones, I was told often made by the giver (what skills!).
This piece is surely the lid of a lenticular shaped turtle shell box, all covered in seed beads.
