About two years ago, I purchased a picture at a Salvation Army store on Vancouver Island.
It was behind glass with paper mat and the frame was beaten up. There was a paper taped over the back.
I kept thinking "This does not look like reproduction, well if I am wrong the money is going for a good cause".
At home, I took the painting out and discovered that it was an original oil on board (12"x 16") done by Margaret Lougheed - circa 1930 to 1932 - from Jasper National park.
I could not have been happier about it. I have the most beautiful memories of my hikes and cross-country ski trips there.
Subsequently, I learned that:
Margaret Hannah Lougheed was born in Hope, British Columbia in 1897 and she died in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1989.
On the Canadian Heritage Information Network (see picture 4), there is an extended description of her career - in 1930, she was the first woman to hold position of artist to the National Parks of Canada.
Collection of her paintings resides in Banff National Park Administration building. In 2010 - during open house event, public was invited to see them. Mount Robson- Berg Lake are also included in the Collection.
Margaret Lougheed got married in May 1934 in New York to Dr. D.F. Kidd. I believe that subsequently, they moved to Vancouver.
However, after her marriage, I have not been able to find any additional information pertaining to her painting career.
