When I picked this up at a Church Rummage sale I was jet black and it felt surprisingly light making me think for a moment it was old plastic.
It was when I turned it over that I realised for sure it was wooden but ebonised a long time ago. It was probably a mistake but I tested it with Methyl alcohol then continued until most of the black disappeared (I left a little as can be seen in a side view)I added nothing except a very thin coat of Linseed and Turpentine. The Mahogany color was it's original color, It was the best (almost) 10 cents buy and I'm so pleased with it! It will go to the Manitowaning museum one day.
A nice piece of treenware. Treen can be found at craft fairs where the local artists show their work. May have been a mistake to take off the natural patina.
thanks Phil , I was in two minds about removing the old ebonised finish but it's opacity led me to think the original finish wouldn't have been intended to hide the grain completely and the underlying Mahogany stain was more fashionable than clear maple at that time.
