This post is for Vintagefran and is the Aurora 1975 Spindrift unbuilt plastic model for the TV series Land of the Giants from the 1960's. The first Aurora model was produced by Aurora in 1968 with a different box cover and the one here was reissued in 1975 by Aurora shortly before the demise of the company. There was also another version by Moebius and in 2002 Polar Lights came out with the same model as they did with many of the older Aurora models. The scale is 1/76 and the material polystyrene. It is not a rare model as there are a few listed online. Here is a link vintagefran you can check out.

At one time I had the Land of the Giants Snake scene Aurora kit which like other childhood toys got lost in the shuffle.

I was in my early double digits when Land of the Giants first appeared Phil. My mother didn't like the snake scene Aurora plastic model I had bought and built.
    7. roddyq roddyq, 7 years ago
I'm happy I never built it Scotty I did build the earlier one from 1968 and when I found this one unassembled I just put it away.

Hi Rick I did see a couple online they were already built with no box or instructions so thinking the same as you:)

Anything in an Aurora box is great. Good thing I don't have it as would probably put it together and paint it. I can't buy sealed GI Joe stuff either.

The Canadian Coast guard use a type of rescue boat that spins, can completely roll over. Called Spindrift 1,2,3..... Pretty neat boat now know where the name came from.

Glad to hear this has brought back good memories from your younger days iggy!! You got a lot of play time out of your model by building it which is the best. Thank you for sharing your great memory.

The link you sent was a great read buckethead, thank you for sharing this:)

So many boxes got tossed fortapache once the model was built. I will keep this one sealed and unbuilt the box displays nice.

Roy this is so interesting about how the Canadian Coast Guard came about naming their rescue boat always great to learn something new. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi roddyq, ah, I want, I want!! Lol. Thank you for posting this. I did have a look online after commenting and saw they made these kits..pricey though. What I'd really love is one 'giant' size, as appears in a couple of episodes, about 3ft long! I wonder if the original model till exists somewhere?

The diorama sounds fun, I've not seen a snake episode yet. Sad it got lost in time. As kids in the 1960's we had Thunderbird toys, probably worth a bomb now, also lost, thrown away by Mother as we got older, my brothers still not forgiven her, lol.

Hi Vintagefran glad you enjoyed the post. buckethead posted a link here about what happened to the original Spindrift if you check his comment. I'm lucky to have a small handful of my childhood toys that my grandmother kept tucked away for me!!

Hi roddyq, I didn't notice bucketheads link. How fantastic is that!! I'd love to see it. Thank god someone had the foresight to save it. I guess the model the giants pick up is long gone. The snake episode was on TV the other day :)
    19. Vintagefran Vintagefran, 7 years ago
Aww, is it not the real model? I realised it couldn't really fly but thought the story of the original 'aircraft' being saved was real :-S

Wow, all the models are amazing! I love the photo of Jupiter 2 (Lost in Space another great sci fi series I'm hope to see re run on TV one day). The whole online airshow is such a cool idea and so well done, it had me fooled for a moment there, lol

Lucky for sure Vintagefran, or the original spindrift would have been lost forever. This is great you are getting to see all the old episodes of Land of the Giants. Will be good if Lost in Space is rerun. Just love all the old scifi series. The Link buckethead added was awesome!! The snake and the bobby pin I always remember that one.

Snap! old sci fi is the best!! so much more fun than the serious, modern, CGI stuff around these days. They had great guest character actors, models and the use of camera angles in Land of the Giants is so clever. I honestly love it as much now as a child. It's great it's on TV or I may never have seen it again, funny but before the show airs there's a warning that it 'may not be suitable for children', lol. I didn't realise until recently the Irwin Allen was responsible for just about All the shows that I loved as a kid (except for Star Trek).
    23. roddyq roddyq, 7 years ago
Yes Vintagefran Irwin Allen was the go to guy for scifi in the 1960's with Voyage to the bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants 4 great ones along with other Tv and movie shows. His works did inspire other scifi writers/producers. I'll watch a 60's classic before the new wave scifi any day.

Hi roddyq, in another Thread you wrote, that as a child you had a arm watch similar to the Westclox Pixies alarm clock. It would be great to see a picture of this watch. I am very curious.
      Thanks in advance,
      Kai

      Hi KaiGermany,
Yes I remember saying to Kerry That I had a child's wristwatch similar to the Pixies Westclox alarm clock with 2 children on a see saw in the playground. What was similar is the faries on the seesaw and the children on the seesaw. If I can figure out how to send you this posting I will or if you can check out my postings you will see the wristwatch.
