Found this vintage chest at an auction yesterday. The top and drawer fronts are a smooth wood, but sides are definitely oak. I just love the character of this piece. It is in rough shape. I am planning to refinish it. Anybody know what kind of wood this is? I'm guessing the time period is 1930s or '40s? Best guess anyone?

A lot were made of pine, your geuss is correct on the time period. Pieces like this can be seen in the old catalogs which I collect.

Thanks so much, Phil. I would love to have catalogs to ID vintage and antique chests/dressers. Do you know where I can get them?

In Canada we had sears and eatons canada who both had super large mail order catalogues. I am not sure what the range of businesses that were in the U.S. with catalogues. There are major public libraries who always have some pretty wonderful collections. My fave has been to purchase the catalogues from used book sources. The u.s. hopefully have more.

Sears has opened their catalog archives to the public. The site is a little odd but once you get used to the layout you can find oodles of neat old stuff there that they sold over the years. There are also other sites with specific Sears items listed, like wood stoves and prefab houses.

This is their catalog archive link: http://searsarchives.com/
