According to Wikipedia, the Peerless Buttonholer manufactured for the Singer Company by the Sackett Mfg. Company for Vibrating Shuttle (VS2) sewing machines was patented in 1887. My personal Peerless Buttonhole Attachment won at a recent auction, carries a patent date of 1884 - 1887, further patents pending.
