Edith Galt Wilson was married to Norman Galt, after his death she married President W.Wilson. My Grandmother was given the watch as she was a Government Secretary. The watch is engraved with the initials of President Wilson and Edith Wilson. As stated above it's in perfect mechanical condition as I have worn it in the past, however am fearful of loosing it..Galt and Bros has closed and I am unable to retrieve any other information. I was told by another Jeweler to donate it the the Presidential Museum, but as I said it's special. I can't even get it appraised as no one, including Sotheby's who stated that the watch is more of a Period/Collectors item that is too old for thier experts to give an appropriate amount. I am not interested in selling this, but any information would be greatly appreciated..
If you would like, I can put you in contact with my older brother who has done a lot of research about the gallts, and he may be able to help. I know your not interested in selling, but if you ever are, I am looking on starting an heirloom for my son. Good luck at finding information!
just to add to what i said, I know we have different spellings of our last names, but our name comes from the GALT origin.
Please contact me anytime. I can not find any information regarding this piece other than what has been passed down. To even get an appraisal has been difficult, I can not find anyone in the area to give me an idea as to it's value, so I can't even insure it...as far as parting with it, I may...as my husband just stated the most fascinating thing is it still keeps perfect time !! Let me know what your brother comes up with. It looks as though there may be a scratched signature inside, but it's so fine I can't make it out.
Thank You,
Laura Benedetti
