Vintage 1960s CHENEY RED ENGLISH PLAID METAL LUNCHBOX.
At first glance I thought this was your run of the mill 40 dollar vintage plaid lunchbox.
But I had real problems identifying the maker, I knew it was not Aladdin right away, the plaid pattern was all wrong, and I could not find any Thermos markings either.
Then I dug deeper, but alas no Ohio Art markings at all anywhere.
All I could find is the 2 small words etched as in the picture above on the chrome latch:
"Cheney" (like Dick Cheney), and "England".
Its safe to assume that this Lumchbox is made in England, which is rare because I have never heard of English Lunchboxes.
I cannot find much on eBay or etsy, except for 1 bloke who claims some book said it is rarity=10 and is worth $1000.00. I honestly doubt this. If this was so, I would see a lot of them selling at that price.
So who is "Cheney"? were they a Metal Maker? A Lunchbox Company?
How many years did Cheney make Lunchboxes?
How many were made of this model? IS it really super rare?
The one I found is in nice collectible shape, original handle, super clean.
Come on Community, enlighten me!
Cheney were a maker of suitcase and bag locks and fittings in England. I think they went out of business in the early 1980s. That doesn't help you with the maker of the lunch box however because I don't think they actually made bags. It seems lots of vintage suitcases are attributed to them but I think that's because the stamp on the locks is the only name found on the bags. It may be worth your investigation.
I love this! Tartan was big in the 1950s.
thanks for the info!
They also made a lunch box that is a replica of an actual sandwich. Its a metal school kids box made like the red plaid box.. the concept art work for this box was done by a Disney Art dept back in the 60's . I bought the art work auctioned off by Hakes Americana auction house in New york?new jersey part of the USA. This auction house is THE PREMIER place that is above reproach in verification of the items they auction.
