Found in 2017 in Muskegon Lake.
Metal (iron) item 2.5"L x 2" W. Has wicked sharp spikes on one side and then is flat on the other side. Does not appear to be broken off from another piece since it appears symmetrical...
Muskegon was a logging, lumber mill community 1840s- to early 1930s. Could it be logging cleats ?

I do not know but your guess sounds pretty good.

It may have gripped into a log and had an eye on the end for a chain to connect to. The County Museum may be able to help, as they have a lot of logging industry stuff.

Are you also from Muskegon? Not too many West Michiganders on CW.

      Hi, Spirit Bear:
Yes, I'm a Muskegon-ite and happy to be here. This was retrieved on this year's Muskegon Lake clean-up project in the Spring. Will take it down to the little museum downtown to see if they can identify it.
      Thanks very much.

It is a scotch fastener, nothing to do with logs. Although it may have held a wooden hub on a wagon together. It is like a big staple that holds two pieces of wood together. You center it over the separation point and hammer it in.

I have modern four and six prong ones. They are commonly used on chair legs etc. to tighten them up.

      Thanks, fhrjr2.
I never would have guessed its purpose but it makes sense. I'm curious about how old it is. Any guesses?

From a ship, diving platform or dock maybe? We have at least four from Michigan now that I know of, Oddly enough all four are in these comments.

      Good morning, PoliticalPinbacks.
When you say at least 4 from Michigan, do you mean that they have appeared in the mystery tool column before?
      Thanks

      Love those mysterious things!
I'd use it as a "NO SITTING HERE" sign... ;-)))

      Thanks, kyratango:
I was tempted to use it in a sculpture, but the points are still really razor sharp and I don't have enough liability insurance to tempt fate.
