Here is a very big mother of pearl pendant which can also be used as a brooch. Unsure if it was designed that way from the start..I have seen a few 'dual' usage items but not many.

The chain has a braided look to it. Appears to be gold plated but need to examine it with a loupe.

Signed Miriam Haskell on the hang tag and the clasp.

The pendant is a looker! The chain is gold plated and off something else, as the brooch/pendant would also be marked Miriam Haskell had it been one of her designs.

I had wondered about the chain especially with another pic I didn't post (limit of 4 unless I do a part II) as it looks like it was replaced.

I've read some conflicting info when researching Miriam Haskell but I have another piece attributed to her that I'm going to look for...I don't think I've posted it here yet.

Did they often have dual use pendants/pins(brooches)? Or is it more likely that this started out its life as just a pendant or just a pin/brooch and someone personally added something themselves? I'd lean towards it always being a pendant as it is so VERY heavy.

I've attempted to pin it on my shirts and it starts to lean over due to weight although having the pin placed higher up on the back does help.

Looking at the chain and pendant I agree with Bonnie. The pendant could be from the back Austro-Hungarian but I'm more inclined to say the pendant is Czech, it's only my opinion. Good luck would your research.

Also may I add I think it was both a pendant and brooch.

Thanks Peasejean55. I value the opinions I get here. Luckily the piece was not one I sought based on Miriam Haskell's name, it was the pendant that I wanted to start with. Although I have enough OCD in me screaming now to find the right pendant that belongs to the chain which we all know will never happen..lol
