This is a gorgeous Art Deco German made Westminster mantle clock. Another with very severe veneer problems, but only to the four columns. In the interests of originality I am attempting to repair, but sadly I think the veneer saving will fail and new veneer applied. Clock movement, perfect, some re-bushing has been done in the last two decades and done well. All the features of a classic Art Deco clock and a lot of work. I will post the pics of whatever results I get with this one. I will use hot hide glue in either case.

Can't wait to see how this one turns out! Yes, veneer can sometimes be a nightmare when trying to find similar veneer woods to match. Sometimes I've faux painted wood grain to match, of course, you have to build up the area (I use a product called Loc tite) that hardens nicely, sand to depth needed to be even with the existing veneer, then begin the process of faux painting. I'm proud to say that in most cases, people can never notice that it's actually painted! I'll post a couple of before and after pics in "furniture" so you can see an example...
You do amazing work and always look forward to when you post

Thanks Bryan, I have toyed with the idea of painting in a grain. I use clear sanding seal over the stain, then stain the sanding seal, prior to the applications of shellac. I'll have a look at your furniture and make a decision. Getting to this clock has to wait until I've finished this Fauch, otherwise two at once is one too may for me.

Paul, were you able to save the original veneer or patch with similar grained veneer? The clock turned out very well!

Hi Bryan, no matter what I did, the old veneer was like kindling and broke at the edge of each repair. So I stripped it off, using several different stains, I shellacked an artificial grain into the columns and polished them with the rest of the veneer. Fortunately the maple strips accepted stain with no patches. Even close examination does not reveal the missing veneer. Had it been a more significant clock, I would have applied new veneer.
