There may be an art work this is based on. Don't know it offhand, but the scene is one of lovers making an offering or propitiating Cupid who is in the scene both as an effigy with his dog on the column as well as present in person with the torch he uses to inflame passions standing behind the couple, just to make sure we know they are in love.
