Hello I have found this old ring that i have no idea about it looks very old not sure what the metal is but am sure it's a intaglio ring, hoping someone knows more about it.

It is an intaglio, but with a very abstract design?

Thanks cameo it's a very strange metal, iam thinking copper and will have to get some blue tack so I can see the design.

Brass is more likely than pure copper. Stronger, but copper content causes blue-green oxidation.

This lots before I cleaned it, I hate the stuff and like to see items at their best, I used to try and make things look like new,but not so much now.

I often make a first go at something like this with toothpaste, not the kind meant for bleaching your teeth, rubbing it in with fingers. It allows me to do some cleaning on items I do not want to completely immerse & soak, something I would advise against with this ring; if water gets under the intaglio, the results over time may not be desirable. Toothpaste gives me more control over what gets wet.

Took a better pic cameo so you could see more.

Does not look like a coat of arms. I stuck it in a photo editing app & found that if you rotate it so that the dot/spot is in either the right or left upper corner, you sort of see a face, a cap on the head. Possible it is an illusion like this. Possible I'm just seeing things that aren't there. :)

I can't work it out ,but tomorrow I will get some plasticine or blue tack and see what it stamps out. Thanks again cameo.
