What did young women do for leisure a hundred years ago? My grandmother and her friends apparently liked to pose by automobiles and have their picture taken. Once, however, they decided a change of pace was in order and went to the lake at the fairgrounds. My grandmother is in photo 1) seated in the car; 2) standing in front on the car; 3) standing in the middle with the hat; and 4) third from right. Decked in their Sunday hats, it looks like some of these gals could be going to a royal wedding rather than spending a day of leisure posing for photographs! I believe these photos were taken sometime between 1910 and 1913.

I think lots of women enjoy this activity still today. Although the dress is much shorter!

Thanks for your comment, vintagemad. You're right, many women do like to "hang out" with friends and I'm very glad the dress is much shorter today!

Those are beautiful photographs and I am glad that you are able to share them with the public. Do you have any idea (where) these pictures were taken?

TreasureTex, thank you. The photos were taken in or around Crown Point, IN. The photo of the girls on the pier was taken at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, IN. The grounds is still the site of one of the largest County Fairs in the state of IN. The first LC Fair was held in 1851, but not at this site until the late 1800s.

Correction: The first Lake County Fair was in 1852, not ‘51. The property in my photo was purchased by the County in the late 1870s with the intention of using it for the Fair!
