I bought this great old trunk yesterday. Research has it coming up as a Georg Schalk oak banded trunk, but I haven't been able to find any further information. It measures 21 x 40 x 11. The top pieces to the locks have an engraved P surrounded by a starburst and a little strangely shaped box underneath with the capital letters DEP inside it. Does anyone know if those engraved letters indicate a manufacture?

The trunk has two travel labels on it from Freiburg/Brsg. To Chatham, New Jersey via New York.

If anyone has any information about this trunk or the manufacture, I would love to learn more about it.

Dep means de'pose', or registered. This is similar to our patent system and was used in France, and Germany. How do you know the maker? Is there a label or tag on it?

Thank you for explaining the DEP. There is no label or tag on mine. I just found photographs of trunks that look like mine, including the same shaped hardware. The labels with those photographs identified them as "Georg Schalk steamer trunk." Do you have any idea what a P with a sore starburst around it refers to? Do you think it is a symbol for a particular manufacturer?

The P mark most likely has to do with the lock. Your trunk is German, and the style of that trunk is quite common with German trunks. Without a label, it could of been made by one of many trunk makers.

Thank you for the information about the lock and for confirming that it is German. Do you have any idea how old it might be?

Does anyone know how to clean the interior canvas?
