Yep, Steptoe1, NOT OLD, even if not made during the 10 past years...

I bought this huge (3.1/4") critter in the same lot of costume jewelry than the big red plastic fly.

The metal is very thin, rather hard and has a rhodium shine...

The eyes are tiny diamonds (one missing... kyratised!), the jadeite wings are rather opaque but of good color (little windows at back of the brooch to allow a light to come through and examine the stone!).

The mark on last pic is beyond my knowledge.
    (yes, steptoe1, I know nothing!).

I'm very curious to know if it is a hallmark or the maker's mark, so, any help welcome :-)

    UPDATE:
SOLVED BY Zilla who translated the first mark K PLATINUM and second CHINA.
    Thank you Zilla!

    3. Zilla Zilla, 7 years ago
It says K Bai Jin. I don't know what the last character says. Baijin means Platinum. ;-)

Very pretty butterfly for sure Pascale, love the colour of the jadeite :-)

I just read your title properly and realised you already knew that white metal part :-/ just ignore my useless previous comment!

Anyway I think the final mark MAY be Hua (traditional character) an abbreviated form of a word for China, Zhonghua. Have a look at this link and see if you agree:

Ken, for sure, age doesn't matter! This was a ;-) to Steptoe1 descriptions...
Thank you for your love and comment.

Bonnie, Judy, Gary, Mani, yep, a BBB, big beautiful butterfly :-))
      Thank you friends!

      Zilla!!! Fantastic solve!
Huge thank you for your translation and the time you gave to the search :-D
I agree with your Hua character too!
      How did you find that?
I knew it wasn't a costume piece, but I should have recognize platinum from the thin but hard metal, and its shine...

Many thanks too for your loves, vetraio, aura, fortapache, Scott, Mike, Melanie, Bijou and Jean, love back to you all :-D

      Gorgeous butterfly, simply beautiful !

I wonder what the K means.

Here's the long answer to your question :-O apologies if you already know this...
You can look up any Chinese character but it's got a few challenges. Each character is made up of a radical (which has the meaning part of the character) and the pronunciation part. First you count the strokes of the radical, then count the strokes of the second part and look it up. So most dictionaries are organised by how many strokes the character has.....
      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_(Chinese_characters)

I find that REALLY difficult. So now I cheat: recently I have been using an app on my smart phone, you can draw the character on the screen. It's still a bit challenging sometimes but generally so much easier. The app's called Pleco Chinese Dictionary. (I think it's free)

Once you have the right character you can copy and paste it into an internet search and find more info.

      :-D

Dear Phil, thank you for appreciating the big butterfly :-D

Zilla, that's a great explanation, I got the Pleco application and will get a try in a calm moment! The first method seems too complicated and time consuming... thank you again for all your help!!!

Mrstyndall thanks for your wow comment! :-))

Shareurpassion, yep, not bad for a costume brooch :-)))) thank you!

Huge collective thank you to all of you, 21 lovers!
