Hi everybody. I acquired this piece a while back and can't find any information on line about it. There is a worn out tag on the bottom of the shelf that reads: The Knoxville Table And Chair Company of Tenn.
Unfortunately when I google a search there is not one example of a table that looks like this that I can find from this company.
The column is fluted and the feet appear to be c - scroll which leads me to believe that it is an American Empire type design.
It stands at 28.5" high and the top plate is 20" square.
Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the company and maybe provide an approximate date of manufacture? What type of wood was used. What exactly was it used for? Does it have any real value? If my sister gets hold of it, she's almost certainly going to paint it white :)
I'd call it a pedestal table. It is American Empire style, but much later.
Based on the label and construction, I'd put it in the 1920s or 30s.
It looks nice but this style is not that popular now and wouldn't be worth a great deal.

It must not have been very popular back then either. In my search I found some rather strange tables by this company but nothing that looks even remotely like this one. I think the company was in business from 1900 to 1930, so you are probably correct in judging how old it is. Maybe an example of American Empire Revival?
I just find it odd that there is not one other piece like it on line.
I found an old clipping about the company. It was originally Knoxville table Co. and in the last years became Knoxville Table and Chair Co. They operated from 1900 thru 1935 and mass produced low quality but sturdy furniture.
Thanks for the info fhrjr2. I may have read something similar and will agree with you on the quality of the piece. I mean the bottom part is actually well put together with the solid pedestal and scroll legs but the top part is nothing more than some laminated boards. (still not sure what type of wood was used)
At least now that I know it's not a Museum piece I'm inclined to rebuild the top portion in a smaller block of solid Mahogany and use it as a plant stand or display one of my sculptures.

We have one very similar. Ours is made out of quartered oak. Yours looks to be something else. Our pedestal is flat/square but it has the same model number. Our number is stamped. (Not a sticker)
I have a table from this company and was able to locate a catalog of theirs from circa 1930. Your model no 1070 is earlier than this catalog (which starts at model no 1940) so I'd assume made around 1915. My table is either model no 375 or 379 so earlier than yours.
