Hey everybody.... I was at an art show in Downtown Phoenix recently and saw some SUPER COOL work by a guy that was buying old art, and putting a modern spin on it. (See last picture).

I thought that re-using outdated art was a fantastic idea and knew that doing something like that would be a great addition to my home.

This weekend I was at a cool vintage shop and came across this portrait (19x24 oil on Linen) and bought it for a nominal sum. After further scrutiny realized that the quality of painting is exceptional and it's definitely old.... now i'm starting to have second thoughts about intentionally messing with it.

    It's signed J. B. Davis

If I had some info on the painter it may help sway my decision so any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

Any thought from the peanut gallery?

Please, please, please do not mess with this fine painting. As you say 'exceptional' You can get oil paintings of all types at Thrift Stores, Good Will etc., why not start there and practice a little?

Your second photo is a great shot. I think a "stand alone". You already have a photo of it, so use it to frame (nicely), and start a collection of 'eyes' or people with old fashioned spectacles on.

Didn't he have a profile shot originally? That was an excellent angle.

Come on... I know there are some art buffs out there that can help identify this.

Another passing fad that ruins art-work. Leave antiques alone unless you intend to fix problems they have. You cannot get back what you destroy.
If you must play with such, buy vintage or modern prints of art-work, not unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Thanks Spirit Bear, 10 minutes after I got this thing home I knew that I couldn't put oil on it... It really is an amazing portrait. I was bummed though because I loved the idea of giving a little life to this boring image. I think it must be like a Banker or CEO.

I was showing this post to a friend at work and he had a brilliant idea to frame it under glass and paint on that.

@MacDaddy, he's trying to bring reform and freedom to China. (His home has a giant "Fu*k China" neon sign on it). He often gets detained for months, grabbed by the secret police in the middle of the night because of his views. If you read about him, he's a very brave Man, worth respecting actually.

Considering how much priceless art makes it to landfills on a daily basis, what he does is of little concern in the grand scheme of things...

And remember, the Sun will absorb the Earth one day... everything will be star dust again.

THIS IS NOT PERMANENT.... although we're getting closer to trying the framing under glass idea.

After much research I found a temporary solution for using her IPAD as a medium to help inspire my daughter to continue to be creative and experiment with art. Isn't that the goal after all?

I bought her the apple pencil for her iPad and after little practice on a painting program this is the wackiest thing he was able to come up with...
