This large bowl - 6" wide by 5" tall bowl is intricately incised with a design of 'Turtle Island' - maybe? it's modern and very well made. it's signed, but i can't read it. can you? i can just make out a price tag of $135 just above the signature. i really like it and thought it was an incredible bargain at $3 from my favorite junk shop.

I've seen this work before, but am unfamiliar with exactly who "Jae" is. It appears, however, that this "Jae" signature may refer to Jarvis Antonio. Pottery signed Jarvis Antonio is very similar, and the stylized "J" on both signatures is the same.

Pots with both signatures are incised and painted commercial greenware, made from molds, rather than traditional handmade Acoma pottery, which may explain why there is little information about the potter. The pots are purchased from wholesale suppliers in Gallup, for example, and then decorated. Since the decorator doesn't actually make the pottery form itself, there is disagreement about whether it should be considered "Acoma pottery," or sold as such. The style, however, has become a popular, less-expensive, souvenir alternative to traditional Acoma pottery.

thank you CanyonRoad. the pot might be made from a mold, but the decoration is definitely hand-done. i'll try to get some better pics so you can see it up-close. the price on it looks like an original price of $138 - which is too high for a molded piece, i think. what do you think?

i just did an image search on 'Jae! acoma' and came up w/ a lot of similar pieces, w/ no info. i think CanyonRoad is right and that it is a mold piece.
